I want to build a standalone wifi repeater — powered by the sun. The problem is how much solar power and how big of a battery?
net draw 4.5v @ 0.66A with load
net draw 4.5v @ 0.60A no load
I’m assuming the best choice would be a 6v battery with a a couple diodes in series to induce ~1.5v drop. Then, I need something to charge it — I found 12v 6w solar chargers in the automotive section of Sears and 16v 2w solar chargers in the marine section of Dick’s Sporting Goods.
How many solar panels and what capacity batteries should I use? Is this the best method or should I use a voltage regulator and go with 12v batteries?
I need this to be as cheap and simple as possible…
I never said anything about using an inverter, changing DC into AC back to DC is just stupid…I’m saying to use a REGULATOR which takes a range of higher voltage, unregulated DC and outputs lower voltage, regulated DC. This is how most car-cellphone chagers work (cellphones use 4-6v to chage)

My 5 watt solar panel car battery charger manual states that charge controller is not necessary for panels under 15 watts. I’m trying to understand the physics of why that’s the case. Even if my panel is only putting out say 15 volts at 350mA couldn’t it eventually overcharge a battery? What if the 5 watt solar panel were connected to a smaller battery, like a 7amp 12v, could it overcharge that battery? BTW, it has a diode to keep the battery voltage from discharging into the solar panel.

I have had this 12v portable Solar Panel for my apartment for awhile. Only problem is that I have no balcony and I can barely get enough sun to use it with my Cobra 450 400-800 watt outlet converter. Can someone advise me a better method to use these? Like do I have to get more 12v solar panels? I have a small apartment and use it on one window. Also is it possible for me to buy a portable storage tank to store the energy gathered from the sun by the solar panel?

I have a 1.8W Eliminator solar charger (designed to keep a 12V car battery topped up) and it said on the package that it has a built in thing so it won’t reverse charge and drain my battery and I was wondering if I were to use this solar charger to recharge small things like a cell phone, laptop, flashlight, etc. if the reverse charge protector thing built in to the solar charger will work for these things which have much smaller batteries or if it will only work properly on a car battery. I’m not too concerned with it taking a long time to charge these other batteries, I’m mainly worried about overcharging/draining and ruining them. Thanks.

I want to know how I can determine my area’s (Rochester NY) yearly solar energy output to see if it would make economic sense to install solar panels. Any websites or resources where I can look?
